The thermal and mineral waters of Bπile Herculane were first discovered and used by the Romans. Much later, in the 18th century, they became celebrated in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. An old Roman inscription û Ad aquas Herculi sacras û made it possible to identify the origin of the resortÆs name, whose symbol is the statue of Hercules erected in 1847. At the end of the 19th century, the casino and the first thermal facilities were built. In the same period Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth of Habsburg had a summer residence built in this resort. The modern buildings erected mainly around the Vicol Park date from the 1970s.
